Episode 18: What Mike Can Do

Mini Story

最初さいしょsaishoの能力のうりょくnouryokuは、 最もっとmottoも役立やくたyakutaつ ── そして最もっとmottoも危険きけんkiken。

The second is unexpected. The first time he shows it, everyone is surprised. Grammar Patterns

Grammar Picture

「こと」 — the nominalizer

「こと」 turns a verb into a noun. The result behaves grammatically as a noun.

• 泳およoyoぐ (verb) → 泳およoyoぐ こと (noun = the act of swimming)
• 食たtaべる (verb) → 食たtaべる こと (noun = eating)

The noun can then take particles: 「泳およoyoぐ ことが 好すsuきです」 = (I) like swimming. 「読書どくしょdokushoする ことは 楽たのtanoしいです」 = reading is fun.

「できる」 vs the potential form (Lesson 27)

Two ways to say 'can':

• V-る ことが できる: longer, more formal — works for any verb
• Potential form (Lesson 27): shorter — 飲のnoめる, 食たtaべられる, 行いiける

Both are correct. Native speakers often prefer the potential form in speech. For N5, 「ことが できる」 is the first form to master.

ピアノを 弾ひhiく — the right verb for each instrument

Japanese uses different verbs for different instruments:

• ピアノを 弾ひhiく (ひく) — play piano (also strings)
• ギターを 弾ひhiく — play guitar
• 太鼓たいこtaiko (たいこ) を 叩たたtataく (たたく) — play drums
• 歌うたutaを 歌うたutaう (うたう) — sing a song

For most modern non-Japanese instruments: 「(instrument) を 弾ひhiく」 works.
