Cinema にほんご is a Japanese learning website that teaches JLPT N5 to N1 through a cinematic spy-thriller series. Each lesson combines grammar, vocabulary, and kanji with a story narrative, designed to be accessible for every learner — including those with dyslexia, hearing, or visual differences.

Who creates Cinema にほんご?

Cinema にほんご is built by Kaori Uchiyama, a Japanese language teacher in Tokyo, working alone from KnitCafe Studio. She became a Japanese teacher to help people who struggle to communicate.

What JLPT levels does Cinema にほんご cover?

Currently N5-N4 (Midnight Encounter) with all 50 lessons published — Season 1 (N5, Lessons 1-25) and Season 2 (N4, Lessons 26-50). The Story section has editions for N5 through N1. Future series will expand to N3, N2, and N1 content.

Does Cinema にほんご support learners with disabilities?

Yes. The site is built to be safe for learners with dyslexia, hearing differences, or visual differences. Furigana toggle, multi-language translations, no autoplay, and clean reading flow are part of the accessibility-first design.

Is Cinema にほんご free?

Yes. The stories, practice tools, and printable cheat sheets are all free, always. If you ever want a teacher beside you, one-to-one lessons with Kaori are available — but everything here works on its own.

Can a complete beginner start? What level do I need?

Complete beginners are welcome. Start with the N5–N4 Lesson Edition of Midnight Encounter and the vocabulary flashcards. The same story is written at several levels, so it grows with you from N5 up to N1.

How do I learn Japanese through film?

You meet each grammar point inside a short cinematic story, then practice it with the free tools — flashcards, reading-speed passages, speaking prompts, and cheat sheets. Learning grammar inside a scene is what makes it stick.

Do I need to read kana or kanji first?

No. Every story line has furigana and romaji, and there are free Kana and Kanji practice tools. You can start reading from day one and pick up kana and kanji as you go.
