Episode 49: In His Presence
Behind the tall doors waited the one who moved everything from the shadows — the Chairman. Even the air changed its words for him.
高い扉の奥に、すべてを陰から動かす人物 ──会長が いた。空気さえ、彼の前では言葉を変える。
会長は 会議室に いらっしゃいます。
The secretary spoke of him with the highest care. “The Chairman has just returned,” she said.
秘書は、最も丁寧な言葉で語った。「会長は今、お戻りに なりました」と。
会長は 今 お戻りに なりました。
“What will you have, sir?” she asked, offering tea. He merely nodded.
「何を召し上がりますか」と彼女は茶を差し出した。会長は ただ うなずいた。

The Chairman raised a hand toward the file. “Have you seen this?” his eyes seemed to ask.
会長は書類へ手を上げた。「これを ご覧に なりましたか」── その目が問うていた。

At last he spoke, his voice low. Mike bowed: “Please, come this way.”
ついに会長が口を開いた、低い声で。マイクは頭を下げた ──「どうぞ、こちらへ お入りください」。

1. Special honorific: いらっしゃいます (be/go/come)
会長は 会議室に いらっしゃいます。
- The Chairman is in the meeting room.
- 会长在会议室。 / 會長在會議室。

Grammar Patterns
尊敬語 raises the OTHER person’s action
Respectful language honors the actor — your boss, customer, elder. The subject is them, never you. (Lowering yourself is 謙譲語, L50.) Particles stay the same; only the verb is elevated.
お + V-ます形 + になります (the general rule)
When no special verb exists, use お + ますstem + になります: 書く→お書きになります, 帰る→お帰りになります. For する-nouns and some words use ご: ご利用になります. One-mora stems (見る・寝る) use special verbs instead.
Seven special verbs — memorize as a set
いらっしゃる (be/go/come), 召し上がる (eat/drink), おっしゃる (say), ご覧になる (see), なさる (do), くださる (give to me), ご存じだ (know). These override the お〜になる rule and are the most-used in real life.
〜れる / られる (lighter respect) & お〜ください
The passive form doubles as mild respect: 帰る→帰られます, 来る→来られます (less formal than お〜になる). For a polite request, use お + ますstem + ください: お入りください, お待ちください.
Grammar Picture
Never use 尊敬語 about yourself
「私が 召し上がります」 is wrong — you can’t honor your own action. For your own actions toward a superior, use 謙譲語 (L50): 私が いたします / まいります. 尊敬 = them up; 謙譲 = me down.
Don’t double up (二重敬語)
「お召し上がりになる」 stacks two honorifics — over-polite and technically wrong. 召し上がる is already respectful. Pick one layer, not two.
いらっしゃる covers three verbs
One word for いる・行く・来る — context tells which. 先生は 教室に いらっしゃいます (is there) / 明日 いらっしゃいますか (will come/go). Its ます-form is irregular: いらっしゃいます.

- Direction first (10 min): draw arrows — 尊敬 lifts them up. Establish this before any form.
- Seven special verbs (20 min): flashcard the set; these matter more than the rule.
- お〜になります (10 min): the fallback rule for everything else; warn about 二重敬語.
- Sort task (10 min): mixed honorific/humble verbs → students label 尊敬 vs 謙譲 (preview L50).
- Service roleplay (15 min): hotel/office staff speaking to a guest.
Note: The deepest error is mixing 尊敬 and 謙譲. Teach them as a contrasting pair across L49-50, not in isolation.
