Episode 17: Orders
Every spy lives by two lists. What must be done. What must not be said. Today\’s briefing is short.
スパイ は 二つの リスト で生きる。 しなければならないこと。 言ってはならないこと。 今日の briefing は、 短い。
The handler\’s voice is low. The room is empty except for them. A red dot blinks on the recorder.

Today\’s destination is south. The bullet train leaves at 7:42.

The handler reminds him. There is one rule that cannot be broken.

1. V-ないで ください (please do not)

2. V-なければ なりません (must do)

Grammar Patterns
V-ない form
Negative plain form. Group 1: change う to あ + ない (行く → 行かない). Group 2: drop る + ない (見る → 見ない). Irregular: しない, 来 (こ) ない.
V-ない + で ください
Polite negative request. ‘Please do not do X.’
V-ない + ければ なりません
Strong obligation. ‘Must do X.’ Drop い from ない, add ければ なりません.
V-ない + くても いいです
No obligation. ‘Do not have to do X.’ Drop い from ない, add くても いいです.
Grammar Picture
V-ない form rules
Group 1 (う-verbs): change final -u to -a + ない
- 書く → 書かない
- 飲む → 飲まない
- 買う → 買わない (NOT 買あない — う-ending becomes わ)
- 待つ → 待たない
- 帰る → 帰らない
Group 2 (る-verbs): drop る, add ない
- 見る → 見ない
- 食べる → 食べない
Group 3 (irregular): する → しない, 来る → 来 (こ) ない
Softer / stronger alternatives
Obligation:
- V-なければ なりません (must, formal)
- V-なければ いけません (must, slight nuance)
- V-なきゃ (casual contraction)
No obligation:
- V-なくても いいです (do not have to)
- V-なくても 大丈夫です (it is fine not to)
〜なくて vs 〜ないで — both look negative
Two negative te-forms with different uses:
- V-ないで: do (something) without doing X / please do not X
- 例: 朝ご飯を 食べないで 出かけました。 = went out without eating breakfast
- V-なくて: cause / reason — because not doing X
- 例: 友達が 来なくて 寂しいです。 = (I) am lonely because (my) friend did not come
Roleplay Practice
Scene: A handler briefs Mike before a mission.
Handler: マイク、 今日は 京都に 行かなければ なりません。
(Mike, you must go to Kyoto today.)
Mike: はい。 ひみつを 言わないで ください、 ですね?
(Yes. Do not tell the secret, right?)
Handler: はい、 ぜったいに 言わないで ください。 ぜったいに 写真を 撮らないで ください。
(Yes, absolutely do not tell. And absolutely do not take photos.)
Mike: 分かりました。
