And the chief handed Mike the key — a sign, from above.然后,部长把钥匙亲手交给了麦克——来自上面的一个信号。然後,部長把鑰匙親手交給了麥克——來自上面的一個訊號。Rồi sếp trao tận tay Mike chiếc chìa khóa — một dấu hiệu, từ bên trên.

A senior agent once taught him the route — a kindness he has not forgotten.一位前辈特工,曾把路线教给他——这份恩情,至今没忘。一位前輩特工,曾把路線教給他——這份恩情,至今沒忘。Một đặc vụ đàn anh từng chỉ cho anh lộ trình — ơn ấy, đến giờ chưa quên.

Grammar Patterns

match the verb to the social level.

もらう→いただく / くれる→くださる (respect)

Same giving/receiving as L24, raised in politeness when the other person is a superior: もらう→いただく (I humbly receive), くれる→くださる (they kindly give to me).

あげる→やる (downward)

When giving to someone below you (subordinate, child, pet, plant): あげる→やる. まごmagoに お菓子かしkashiを やります.

V-て いただきます / くださいます

Attach to the て-form for actions done for/by you politely: おしoshiえて いただきました (I had (them) kindly teach me), miせて くださいました (they kindly showed me). Request: 〜て くださいませんか (very polite).

Giving / receiving — with respect levels I receive ←もらういただく(humble) they give me →くれるくださる(respect) I give down ←あげるやる(to subordinate) Very polite request: 見せてくださいませんか

Who's above, who's below?

Choose the verb by the social position of the giver/receiver: superiors → いただく / くださる; equals → もらう / くれる / あげる; below → やる. Getting this right shows you read the relationship correctly.

Request ladder (review + new top)

〜て → 〜てください → 〜てくださいませんか → 〜ていただけませんか (L26). 「miせて くださいませんか」 is very polite; 「miせて いただけませんか」 is the humble peak.

Roleplay Practice

make a very polite request.

マイク: 部長ぶちょうbuchou地図ちずchizumiせて くださいませんか。
(Chief, could you kindly show me the map?)

部長ぶちょうbuchou: いいよ。これを 使つかtsukaいなさい。
(Sure. Use this.)

マイク: ありがとうございます。情報じょうほうjouhouいただitadaきました。
(Thank you. I've received the information.)

Read the sections in the order they appear. About 40 minutes.
Tomorrow, come back and say the Key Sentences again — that is where it sticks.

For Teachers

For Teachers (45-60 minutes in class)

  • Position map (10 min): draw an up/same/down chart; assign the right verb per relationship.
  • Conversion (15 min): take L24 sentences and raise them to いただく/くださる.
  • Request ladder (10 min): rank 〜て / てください / てくださいませんか / ていただけませんか.
  • Roleplay (15 min): make polite requests to a superior.

Note: This previews keigo (L49-50). Anchor verb choice in who is above/below rather than memorized forms.
