And Yet.

They had promised. Midnight, at the old pier — and yet, no one came.明明约好了。半夜，在旧栈桥——可是，谁都没来。明明約好了。半夜，在舊棧橋——可是，誰都沒來。Rõ ràng đã hẹn. Nửa đêm, ở cầu tàu cũ — vậy mà, không một ai đến.
約束やくそくyakusokuしたはずだった。真夜中まよなかmayonaka、古ふるfuruい桟橋さんばしsanbashiで ── のに、誰だれdareも来こkoなかった。

He had taken the medicine — and yet, the fever would not come down.药是吃了——可是，烧一直不退。藥是吃了——可是，燒一直不退。Thuốc đã uống — vậy mà, cơn sốt không chịu hạ.
薬くすりkusuriは飲のnoんだ ── のに、熱ねつnetsuは下さsaがらなかった。

This のに ≠ the L42 「のに (use/cost)」

Here のに follows a full plain-form clause and means "although". The L42 のに follows a dictionary-form verb + 使つかtsukaう/便利べんりbenri/かかる and means "for doing". Read the whole clause to tell them apart.

のに can stand at the end as a sigh

「せっかく 来きkiたのに……」 (after I came all this way…) — trailing off with のに expresses regret or reproach without finishing the sentence. Very natural in speech.

• 場合ばあいbaaiは (10 min): write emergency rules (fire, earthquake, danger).
• Roleplay (15 min): complain about a let-down with のに.

Note: Explicitly contrast with the L42 use/cost のに so the two never blur.
