Coat on, key in hand — he was just about to head out into the mission.
コートを着て、鍵を握る ── ちょうど今、任務へ出かけるところだった。
これから 任務に 出かける ところです。
Hours earlier, hunched over the desk, he had been in the very middle of breaking the cipher.
数時間前、机に かがみ ── まさに暗号を解いているところだった。
今、暗号を 解いている ところです。
And then — the last line gave way. He had cracked it just this second.

The contact had only just arrived in Tokyo — and yet, by all reasoning, he should come.
連絡員は東京に来たばかりだった ── それでも、道理から言えば、必ず来るはずだ。

1. V-辞書形 + ところです (just about to do)
これから 任務に 出かける ところです。
- I’m just about to head out on the mission.
- 我正要出发去执行任务。 / 我正要出發去執行任務。
- Tôi vừa định lên đường làm nhiệm vụ.
2. V-ている + ところです (in the middle of doing)
今、暗号を 解いている ところです。
- I’m in the middle of decoding the cipher.
- 我正在破解密码。 / 我正在破解密碼。
- Tôi đang giải mã.
3. V-た + ところです (just did, this moment)
たった今、暗号を 解いた ところです。
- I just cracked the cipher this very moment.
- 我刚刚破解了密码。 / 我剛剛破解了密碼。
- Tôi vừa mới giải xong mật mã.
4. 普通形 + はずです (should be / is expected)
連絡員は 必ず 来る はずです。
- The contact should definitely come.
- 联络员一定会来。 / 聯絡員一定會來。
- Người liên lạc nhất định sẽ đến.

Grammar Patterns
V + ところです — three phases of time
ところ pins the action to right now. 辞書形 ところ = about to (まだ). ている ところ = in progress. た ところ = just finished (this instant).
V-た ところ vs V-た ばかり
Both = ‘just did’, but た ところ = literally seconds ago, in this scene; た ばかり = recently, even days ago, with a feeling of ‘still new’. 日本に 来た ばかりです (I only recently came to Japan).
普通形 + はずです
A logical expectation: from what you know, it should be so. な-adj な はず / N の はず. Negative: 来ない はず / 来 なかった はず. (≠ べき = ‘ought to / obligation’).
Grammar Picture
「た ところ」 is tighter than 「た ばかり」
食べた ところです = I just finished eating, the plate’s still here. 食べた ばかりです = I ate not long ago (could be an hour). Use ところ for the immediate scene, ばかり for “recently / still new”.
はず = expectation, not duty
はず = “it should be so” (I’m confident from logic). べき (later) = “you ought to” (obligation). 「来る はず」 = I expect him to come. 「来る べき」 = he ought to come.

仲間: 暗号は どうですか。
(How’s the cipher?)
マイク: たった今、解いた ところです。
(I cracked it just this moment.)
仲間: 連絡員は 来ますか。
(Will the contact come?)
マイク: 必ず 来る はずです。これから 出かける ところです。
(He should definitely come. I’m about to head out now.)
