Episode 45: And Yet

They had promised. At midnight, by the old pier — and yet, no one came.

約束やくそくyakusokuしたのに、誰だれdareも 来きkiませんでした。

He had taken the medicine — and yet the fever would not fall.

薬くすりkusuriを 飲のnoんだのに、熱ねつnetsuが 下さsaがりません。

A note in his coat spelled out the rule: in case of danger, do not use the phone.

危険きけんkikenな 場合ばあいbaaiは、電話でんわdenwaを 使つかtsukaわないでください。

And if the signal failed, there was a second plan — written just below.

信号しんごうshingouが 消きkiえた 場合ばあいbaaiは、計画けいかくkeikakuBを 使つかtsukaいます。

Key Sentences

1. 普通形 + のに (although / and yet)

約束やくそくyakusokuしたのに、誰だれdareも 来きkiませんでした。

  • Although they promised, no one came.
  • 明明约好了，却没有人来。 / 明明約好了，卻沒有人來。
  • Đã hứa rồi mà chẳng có ai đến.

2. のに (result contrary to expectation)

薬くすりkusuriを 飲のnoんだのに、熱ねつnetsuが 下さsaがりません。

  • Even though I took the medicine, the fever won’t go down.
  • 明明吃了药，烧却没退。 / 明明吃了藥，燒卻沒退。
  • Đã uống thuốc rồi mà sốt vẫn không hạ.

3. N な / Adj + 場合は (in the case of)

危険きけんkikenな 場合ばあいbaaiは、電話でんわdenwaを 使つかtsukaわないでください。

  • In case of danger, please don’t use the phone.
  • 危险时请不要使用电话。 / 危險時請不要使用電話。
  • Trong trường hợp nguy hiểm, đừng dùng điện thoại.

4. V-た 場合は (if/when V happens)

信号しんごうshingouが 消きkiえた 場合ばあいbaaiは、計画けいかくkeikakuBを 使つかtsukaいます。

  • If the signal goes out, we use Plan B.
  • 信号消失时，使用B计划。 / 信號消失時，使用B計劃。
  • Nếu tín hiệu mất, dùng kế hoạch B.

Grammar Patterns

普通形 + のに (although)

Joins two facts where the second is contrary to what you’d expect from the first, often with surprise or complaint. Note: な-adj/N take な のに (元気なのに / 学生なのに).

のに vs けど

Both mean ‘but’. のに adds emotion — surprise, regret, dissatisfaction. けど is neutral. 高いのに 買った (and yet I bought it — frustration) vs 高いけど 買った (it’s pricey but I bought it).

〜場合は (in the case of)

States what to do in a particular situation. Connects like a noun: V-た/V-ない 場合, い-adj 場合, な-adj な 場合, N の 場合 (火事の場合).

This のに ≠ the L42 「のに (use/cost)」

Here のに follows a full plain-form clause and means “although”. The L42 のに follows a dictionary-form verb + 使う/便利/かかる and means “for doing”. Read the whole clause to tell them apart.

のに can stand at the end as a sigh

「せっかく 来たのに……」 (after I came all this way…) — trailing off with のに expresses regret or reproach without finishing the sentence. Very natural in speech.

Roleplay Practice

マイク: 約束やくそくyakusokuしたのに、誰だれdareも 来きkiませんでした。
(They promised, and yet no one came.)

仲間なかまnakama: 危険きけんkikenな 場合ばあいbaaiは どうしますか。
(What do we do in case of danger?)

マイク: 電話でんわdenwaを 使つかtsukaわないでください。信号しんごうshingouが 消きkiえた 場合ばあいbaaiは、計画けいかくkeikakuBです。
(Don’t use the phone. If the signal goes out, it’s Plan B.)
