The #1 keigo error: mixing 尊敬そんけいsonkei and 謙譲けんじょうkenjou

Saying 「先生せんせいsenseiは 参まいmaiりますか」 (humble verb about the teacher) is a classic mistake — it lowers the person you mean to honor. For them, use 尊敬そんけいsonkei (いらっしゃいますか). Always check: whose action am I describing?

申もうmouします vs 申もうmouし上あaげます

申もうmouします = humble "say" in general (名前なまえnamaeを 申もうmouします). 申もうmouし上あaげます = humble "say to a specific honored person" (お礼れいreiを 申もうmouし上あaげます) — one extra notch of deference, common in set greetings.

います → おります in humble speech

On the phone or in formal self-introduction: 「東京とうきょうtoukyouに おります」 (I'm in Tokyo). 〜ております replaces 〜ています: お待まmaち しております (I am waiting). A staple of business calls.

• Mirror chart (15 min): 尊敬そんけいsonkei (L49) and 謙譲けんじょうkenjou side by side — same verb, two directions. This contrast is the whole lesson.
• Special verbs (20 min): drill the humble set; pair each with its 尊敬そんけいsonkei twin (召めmeし上あaがる ↔ いただく, いらっしゃる ↔ 参まいmaiる).
• お〜します / ご〜します (10 min): the general rule for service language.
• Whose action? (10 min): rapid sort — students decide 尊敬そんけいsonkei or 謙譲けんじょうkenjou for each sentence.
