Episode 50: At Your Service
The long night had brought him here, to the end of every thread. Now, in the highest room, Mike lowered himself — not in weakness, but in respect.
長い夜が、彼を ここへ導いた ── すべての糸の果てへ。今、最も高い部屋で、マイクは身を低くした ──弱さではなく、敬意で。

“I have come from America,” he said quietly, “to return what was taken.”

From his coat he drew the file and offered it with both hands. “I have read the contents,” he admitted.

The Chairman was silent for a long moment. Then Mike reached out. “Allow me to carry it for you.”

Grammar Patterns
謙譲語 lowers YOUR OWN action
Humble language is the mirror of 尊敬語: you lower yourself so the other person is honored by contrast. Used only for your own actions (or your in-group’s) that touch a superior. Never use it about the other person.
お + V-ます形 + します (the general rule)
When no special verb exists: お + ますstem + します — 持つ→お持ちします, 送る→お送りします. For する-nouns: ご + noun + します — ご案内します, ご説明します, ご連絡します.
The special humble verbs — a set to memorize
参る (go/come), おる (be), いたす (do), 申す (say), いただく (eat/receive), 拝見する (see), 伺う (ask/visit), お目にかかる (meet), 存じる (know), 差し上げる (give). These are the backbone of polite business and service Japanese.
尊敬 ↔ 謙譲: the same event, two directions
When your boss eats: 召し上がります (尊敬, lift them). When you eat in front of them: いただきます (謙譲, lower yourself). Always ask: whose action is it? Theirs → 尊敬. Mine → 謙譲.
Grammar Picture
The #1 keigo error: mixing 尊敬 and 謙譲
Saying 「先生は 参りますか」 (humble verb about the teacher) is a classic mistake — it lowers the person you mean to honor. For them, use 尊敬 (いらっしゃいますか). Always check: whose action am I describing?
申します vs 申し上げます
申します = humble “say” in general (名前を 申します). 申し上げます = humble “say to a specific honored person” (お礼を 申し上げます) — one extra notch of deference, common in set greetings.
います → おります in humble speech
On the phone or in formal self-introduction: 「東京に おります」 (I’m in Tokyo). 〜ております replaces 〜ています: お待ち しております (I am waiting). A staple of business calls.
