Episode 13: What Mike Wants

Mini Story

A spy keeps two lists. What the mission demands. What the heart wants. A new mission needs a new identity. ほしい — used only for self and direct questions

「ほしい」 expresses YOUR wants, or asks ANOTHER PERSON about theirs:

• (私わたしwatashiは) コーヒーが ほしいです。 = I want coffee.
• 何なにnaniが ほしいですか? = What do you want?

You CANNOT say 「マイクさんは コーヒーが ほしいです」 directly about a third person. To describe what a third person wants, use 「ほしがっています」 (Lesson 24) or rephrase.

In our spy story, when we say 「マイクは パスポートが ほしいです」, we treat it as Mike inner voice (narrator omniscience).

〜たい conjugates like an い-adjective

Once you make V-stem + たい, it behaves as an い-adjective:

• Present positive: 帰かえkaeりたいです。
• Present negative: 帰かえkaeりたく ありません。
• Past positive: 帰かえkaeりたかったです。
• Past negative: 帰かえkaeりたく ありませんでした。

Same i-adjective endings — once you learn one い-adj, you have learned them all.

Particle change with たい — を or が?

For transitive verbs, the object can take either:

• 「水みずmizuを 飲のnoみます」 → 「水みずmizuを 飲のnoみたいです」 OR 「水みずmizuが 飲のnoみたいです」

Both are correct. Native speakers tend to use 「が」 when emphasizing the desire (the wanting), and 「を」 when emphasizing the action.

In practice, either works for N5 — start with whichever feels natural.

〜に 行いiく vs 〜へ 行いiく vs 〜に行いiく (purpose)

Three uses of these particles around 「行いiく」:

• 場所ばしょbasho に / へ 行いiく = go TO a place
• 場所ばしょbasho で 〜する = do something AT a place
• V-stem に 行いiく = go FOR the purpose of V-ing

The third 「に」 (purpose) attaches to a verb stem, not a place. 「写真しゃしんshashinを 撮とtoりに 行いiく」 = go to take photos.

Cultural note: Japanese tends to use 「〜たいと 思おもomoいます」 (I am thinking of doing) instead of bare 「たい」 to sound less direct. Introduce this softer form when students are comfortable with bare たい.
