Episode 14: Stay Still

Mini Story

Surveillance is patience. Wait. Watch. Do not move. The te-form is a spy’s grammar — an order that never raises its voice, an action that goes on without ending.监视,就是忍耐。等。看。不动。て形是间谍的语法——不必提高声音的命令,不会结束、一直持续的动作。監視,就是忍耐。等。看。不動。て形是間諜的語法——不必提高聲音的命令,不會結束、一直持續的動作。Giám sát là sự kiên nhẫn. Chờ. Quan sát. Không động đậy. Thể て là ngữ pháp của điệp viên — mệnh lệnh không cần lớn tiếng, hành động cứ tiếp diễn không kết thúc.

The earpiece crackles. The contact is moving too fast. Mike whispers an order — soft, almost gentle.耳机响了。联络人动得太快。麦克低声下了一道命令——很轻,几乎是温柔的。耳機響了。聯絡人動得太快。麥克低聲下了一道命令——很輕,幾乎是溫柔的。Tai nghe khẽ vang. Người liên lạc đang di chuyển quá nhanh. Mike thì thầm một mệnh lệnh — nhẹ, gần như dịu dàng.

ちょっと maってください。

The target steps out of a black sedan. Mike does not move. He records with his eyes alone — the clothes, the walk, the hand drifting near the coat pocket.目标从黑色轿车里下来。麦克不动。只用眼睛记录——衣着、走路的样子、在外套口袋附近游移的那只手。目標從黑色轎車裡下來。麥克不動。只用眼睛記錄——衣著、走路的樣子、在外套口袋附近游移的那隻手。Mục tiêu bước xuống từ chiếc sedan đen. Mike không động đậy. Anh ghi lại chỉ bằng đôi mắt — trang phục, dáng đi, bàn tay lởn vởn gần túi áo khóac.

The contact whispers back. Where do we meet? Mike does not move his face.联络人低声回问:在哪里见?麦克的脸,纹丝不动。聯絡人低聲回問:在哪裡見?麥克的臉,紋絲不動。Người liên lạc thì thầm hỏi lại: gặp ở đâu? Gương mặt Mike không hề nhúc nhích.

One hour later. The platform empties. Trains pass through. Mike is still standing there.一个小时后。月台空了。列车一班班驶过。麦克,还站在那里。一個小時後。月台空了。列車一班班駛過。麥克,還站在那裡。Một giờ sau. Sân ga vắng dần. Những chuyến tàu chạy qua. Mike, vẫn còn đứng đó.

Grammar Patterns

focus on て-form rules.

V-て ください

Polite request. Drop ます, change to て-form, add ください.

V-て います (progressive)

Currently doing — ongoing action right now.

V-て います (state)

Some verbs in て-form います describe a resulting state: 結婚けっこんkekkonしています = is married, shiっています = knows.

ちょっと 〜て ください

Soften a request with 「ちょっと」 = a little, a moment.

Grammar Picture

て-form ── request and "now doing" 食べます 食べて (て-form) → ください (please) 食べて ください (please eat) → います (NOW doing) 食べて います (am eating right now) Pattern 1 — Polite request: 写真を 撮って ください。 Pattern 2 — Now doing: マイク レポート 読んで います。 — て-form 形成: う/つ/る → って, く → いて, ぐ → いで, む/ぶ/ぬ → んで, す → して — — irregular: 来ます → 来て, します → して, 行きます → 行って —

て-form rules by verb group

Group 1 (う-verbs) — depends on final syllable:

  • す → して (はなhanaします → はなhanaして)
  • く → いて (kaきます → kaいて)
  • ぐ → いで (いそisoぎます → いそisoいで)
  • む / ぶ / ぬ → んで (noみます → noんで, あそasoびます → あそasoんで)
  • る / う / つ → って (maちます → maって, kaいます → kaって, かえkaeります → かえkaeって)
  • Exception: iきます → iって

Group 2 (る-verbs): drop ます, add て (miます → miて, taべます → taべて)

Group 3 (irregular): します → して、 kiます → ki

Progressive vs state — 〜て います

Two meanings of V-て います:

  • Progressive (action in progress): taべて います = (am) eating, maって います = (am) waiting
  • State / result (a state that started and continues): 結婚けっこんkekkonして います = is married, shiって います = knows, suんで います = lives

How to tell which? Verb-by-verb. Action verbs default to progressive; change-of-state verbs default to resulting state. 「shiりません」 (do not know) is NEVER 「shiらない」 in everyday speech — use 「shiって いません」 ... wait, actually 「shiりません」 IS the standard negative. The positive is 「shiって います」. Asymmetric.

Softening requests — politer alternatives

「〜て ください」 can sound directive. Softer forms:

  • 〜て くださいませんか? = Could you please...? (more polite question form)
  • 〜て いただけますか? = Would you do for me? (humble)
  • Plus 「ちょっと」 makes any request gentler.

In Japanese, the longer the sentence, often the politer. For requests to superiors, prefer 「〜て いただけますか?」.

〜ましょう / 〜ましょうか — let us / shall we?

L14 also introduces volitional forms:

  • V-ましょう = let us do (suggestion you join)
  • V-ましょうか? = shall we / shall I?

e.g., 「一緒いっしょisshoiきましょう。」 = let us go together. 「コーヒーを noみましょうか?」 = shall we drink coffee?

Roleplay Practice

(The station is over there. Please go straight.)

Mike: もう一度いちどichido iって ください。
(Please say it once more.)

Stranger: まっすぐ iって、 そして みぎmigimaがって ください。
(Go straight, then turn right.)

Mike: ありがとう ございます。

How to Use This Lesson

Read the sections in the order they appear. About 40 minutes.
Tomorrow, come back — describe what you are doing right now in V-て います.

For Teachers

For Teachers (45-60 minutes in class)

  • Warm-up (5 min): Simon-says style. Teacher says 「taって ください」, students stand. Drill basic commands.
  • て-form drill (15 min): Sort 20 verbs into Group 1 / Group 2 / Group 3. Make て-form.
  • Progressive drill (10 min): Show action pictures. Students describe with V-て います.
  • Request drill (10 min): Pairs make requests of each other, then perform.
  • Roleplay (15 min): Asking directions. Vary the destination each round.
  • Check Yourself (5-10 min): Individual quiz.

Common pitfall: Students apply Group 2 rules to Group 1 verbs (e.g., maちて instead of maって). Drill the う-verb sound changes early and often.
