Episode 17: Orders
A dim bar. Mike’s contact lifts a cigarette toward a hidden gas line — one spark and the room goes up.
薄暗い バー。マイクの協力者が、隠された ガス管の近くで タバコを持ち上げる ── 一つの火花で部屋は吹き飛ぶ。
タバコを 吸わないで ください。
Then his eyes catch the glass on the table. He knows that faint almond smell. Poison.

1. V-ないで ください (please don’t — prohibition)
タバコを 吸わないで ください。

Grammar Patterns
V-ない + で ください
Take the ない-form, add で ください = a request not to do something. 吸う→吸わない→吸わないでください.
V-なければ なりません
ない-form (drop い) + ければ なりません = must / have to. 行かない→行かなければなりません. (Casual: 行かなきゃ.)
V-なくても いいです
ない-form (drop い) + くても いいです = don’t have to / it’s OK not to. 来ない→来なくてもいいです.

Making the ない-form
- Group I: -u → -anai (吸う→吸わない, 行く→行かない). Note: う→わ.
- Group II: -る → -ない (食べる→食べない).
- する→しない, 来る→来ない.
なければなりません vs なくてもいいです
Two sides of obligation: なければなりません = you MUST. なくてもいいです = you DON’T have to. Both build on the ない-form.

Scene: A bar. Mike spots danger.
マイク: 待って! おさけを 飲まないで ください。
(Wait! Please don’t drink the alcohol.)
協力者: どうして ですか?
(Why?)
マイク: 危ないんです。すぐ 行かなければ なりません。あなたは 来なくても いいです。
(It’s dangerous. I have to go now. You don’t have to come.)

Note: たばこを吸わないでください is the canonical 17課 example; おさけを飲まないでください adds a dramatic hook (the drink is poisoned — kept in the scene, not the vocabulary).
