Episode 13: What Mike Wants

Mini Story

A spy keeps two lists. What the mission demands. What the heart wants. Mike has not opened the second list in a long time.间谍有两张清单。一张,是任务要的。一张,是心里想要的。第二张清单,麦克已经很久没有打开过了。間諜有兩張清單。一張,是任務要的。一張,是心裡想要的。第二張清單,麥克已經很久沒有打開過了。Điệp viên giữ hai danh sách. Một — những gì nhiệm vụ đòi hỏi. Một — những gì trái tim mong muốn. Danh sách thứ hai, Mike đã lâu lắm rồi không mở ra.

A new mission needs a new identity. He puts in the request through the usual channel — forged papers, another name, another face on paper.新的任务,要有新的身份。他通过老渠道提出请求——伪造的证件,另一个名字,纸上的另一张脸。新的任務,要有新的身分。他透過老管道提出請求——偽造的證件,另一個名字,紙上的另一張臉。Nhiệm vụ mới cần một thân phận mới. Anh gửi yêu cầu qua kênh quen thuộc — giấy tờ giả, một cái tên khác, một gương mặt khác trên giấy.

Grammar Patterns

note the three "want" forms.

N が ほしいです

Want a noun (thing). Use 「が」 to mark what you want.

V-stem たいです

Want to do a verb. Drop ます, add たい. Conjugates like an い-adjective: たかったです, たく ありません.

場所ばしょbasho へ V-stem に 行いiきます/来きkiます

Go / come to a place for the purpose of V-ing. Drop ます, add に before 行いiく/来くkuる.

V-たく ありません

Negative — do not want to. Drop い from たい, add く ありません (い-adj negative pattern).

Grammar Picture

What you want ── object, action, going somewhere 私 ♥ ほしい / 〜たい (want object / want to do) 〜に行きます (for purpose) Pattern 1 — Want a thing: 私 は パスポート が ほしい です。 Pattern 2 — Want to do: 私 は 日本 へ 行き たい です。 Pattern 3 — Go somewhere for purpose: 京都 へ 遊び に 行きます。

Need more detail? Open the sections below.

ほしい — used only for self and direct questions

「ほしい」 expresses YOUR wants, or asks ANOTHER PERSON about theirs:

  • (私わたしwatashiは) コーヒーが ほしいです。 = I want coffee.
  • 何なにnaniが ほしいですか? = What do you want?

You CANNOT say 「マイクさんは コーヒーが ほしいです」 directly about a third person. To describe what a third person wants, use 「ほしがっています」 (Lesson 24) or rephrase.

In our spy story, when we say 「マイクは パスポートが ほしいです」, we treat it as Mike inner voice (narrator omniscience).

〜たい conjugates like an い-adjective

Once you make V-stem + たい, it behaves as an い-adjective:

  • Present positive: 帰かえkaeりたいです。
  • Present negative: 帰かえkaeりたく ありません。
  • Past positive: 帰かえkaeりたかったです。
  • Past negative: 帰かえkaeりたく ありませんでした。

Same i-adjective endings — once you learn one い-adj, you have learned them all.

Particle change with たい — を or が?

For transitive verbs, the object can take either:

  • 「水みずmizuを 飲のnoみます」 → 「水みずmizuを 飲のnoみたいです」 OR 「水みずmizuが 飲のnoみたいです」

Both are correct. Native speakers tend to use 「が」 when emphasizing the desire (the wanting), and 「を」 when emphasizing the action.

In practice, either works for N5 — start with whichever feels natural.

〜に 行いiく vs 〜へ 行いiく vs 〜に行いiく (purpose)

Three uses of these particles around 「行いiく」:

  • 場所ばしょbasho に / へ 行いiく = go TO a place
  • 場所ばしょbasho で 〜する = do something AT a place
  • V-stem に 行いiく = go FOR the purpose of V-ing

The third 「に」 (purpose) attaches to a verb stem, not a place. 「写真しゃしんshashinを 撮とtoりに 行いiく」 = go to take photos.

Roleplay Practice

Scene: Mike meets a friend after months. The friend asks what he wants to do.

Friend: マイク、 週末しゅうまつshuumatsuは 何なにnaniを したいですか?
(Mike, what do you want to do this weekend?)

Mike: 京都きょうとkyoutoへ 写真しゃしんshashinを 撮とtoりに 行いiきます。
(I am going to Kyoto to take photos.)

Friend: いいですね。 一緒いっしょisshoに 行いiきますか?
(Sounds great. Shall we go together?)

Mike: ありがとうございます。 でも、 一人ひとりhitoriで 行いiきます。
(Thank you. But I will go alone.)

Friend: ……そうですか。
(…I see.)

How to Use This Lesson

Read the sections in the order they appear. About 40 minutes.
Tomorrow, come back — list three things you want and one place you want to go.

For Teachers

For Teachers (45-60 minutes in class)

  • Warm-up (5 min): Wishlist game — students name 3 things they want.
  • Conjugation drill (10 min): 10 verbs. Students make V-たい forms (positive and negative).
  • Purpose drill (10 min): Show place pictures. Students make 「場所ばしょbasho へ V-stem に 行いiく」.
  • Interview (10 min): Pairs ask 「週末しゅうまつshuumatsuは 何なにnaniが したいですか?」.
  • Roleplay (15 min): Travel planning. Each student plans a trip with destination + purpose.
  • Check Yourself (5-10 min): Individual quiz.

Cultural note: Japanese tends to use 「〜たいと 思おもomoいます」 (I am thinking of doing) instead of bare 「たい」 to sound less direct. Introduce this softer form when students are comfortable with bare たい.
