Episode 39: Reasons
A single line arrives on the encrypted channel. He reads it, and for the first time in days, his shoulders drop.
暗号回線に一行。彼は それを読み、数日ぶりに肩の力が抜けた。
メールを 読んで、安心しました。
But the streets won’t cooperate. An accident has jammed every road out.
だが街は協力しない。事故で、出る道が すべて混んでいる。
事故で 道が 混んで います。
He keeps the excuse simple and true: a hospital visit. May he leave early?
言い訳は単純で本当の こと ── 病院。早く出ても いいか。
病院へ 行くので、早く 帰っても いいですか。
And to the bystander beside him, a quiet warning with a reason attached.
そして隣の通行人へ、理由を添えた静かな警告。
危ないので、ここに いないで ください。

1. V-て、… (emotional cause)
メールを 読んで、安心しました。
- I read the email and felt relieved.
- 看了邮件，松了一口气。 / 看了郵件，鬆了一口氣。

2. N で、… (cause — due to)
事故で 道が 混んで います。
- The roads are jammed because of an accident.
- 因为事故，路很堵。 / 因為事故，路很堵。
- Vì tai nạn nên đường tắc.
3. 〜ので、… (polite reason)
病院へ 行くので、早く 帰っても いいですか。
- Since I’m going to the hospital, may I leave early?
- 因为要去医院，可以早点回去吗？ / 因為要去醫院，可以早點回去嗎？
- Vì tôi phải đi bệnh viện, tôi về sớm được không?
4. 〜ので、… (reason + request)
危ないので、ここに いないで ください。
- It’s dangerous, so please don’t stay here.
- 因为危险，请不要待在这里。 / 因為危險，請不要待在這裡。
- Vì nguy hiểm, xin đừng ở đây.

Grammar Patterns
V-て、… (cause)
The て-form can link a cause to a (usually emotional, non-volitional) result: 読んで 安心しました, 聞いて びっくりしました. No command/request follows this one.
N で、… (cause)
A noun + で can mark a cause: 事故で 遅れました (was late due to an accident), 地震で…(because of the earthquake).
〜ので
Soft, polite ‘because’. Connects with the plain form (な-adj/N add な: 危険なので, 学生なので). Softer than から — good for explanations & requests.

〜ので vs 〜から
Both mean ‘because’. から: subjective, can be assertive. ので: softer, more objective/polite — preferred for requests, excuses, and formal speech. 「危険なので、入らないでください」 sounds gentler than 「危険だから」.
て-cause: only with non-volitional results
The て-cause works with feelings/states (安心する, 困る, 疲れる), not with commands or volitional acts. For those, use から/ので: 雨が降ったので、帰りました.

マイク: 病院へ 行くので、早く 帰っても いいですか。
(Since I’m going to the hospital, may I leave early?)
上司: 道は?
(How are the roads?)
マイク: 事故で 混んで います。気を つけて 行きます。
(They’re jammed due to an accident. I’ll be careful.)
