Episode 41: With Respect
In this world, even gifts carry rank. From the chief, Mike received something rare — and said it with care.
この世界では、贈り物にも序列がある。部長から、マイクは珍しい ものを受け取った ── 言葉を選んで。
わたしは 部長に 情報を 頂きました。
And the chief, in turn, handed him the key — a gesture from above.
そして部長は、マイクに鍵を手渡した ── 上からの一つのしるし。
部長が わたしに 鍵を くださいました。
A senior agent had taught him the route once — a debt he still remembers.
先輩の諜報員が、かつて ルートを教えてくれた ── 今も忘れぬ恩。
わたしは 先輩に ルートを 教えて 頂きました。
Now, to a stranger who may hold the answer, he makes the most courteous of requests.
今、答えを握るかもしれぬ相手へ、彼は最も丁寧な頼みを する。

Key Sentences
1. 〜に … を いただきます (humbly receive)
わたしは 部長に 情報を 頂きました。
- I received information from the chief (humble).
- 我从部长那里得到了情报。 / 我從部長那裡得到了情報。
- Tôi đã nhận thông tin từ trưởng phòng.
2. … が わたしに … を くださいます (respectfully give to me)
部長が わたしに 鍵を くださいました。
- The chief gave me a key (respectful).
- 部长给了我钥匙。 / 部長給了我鑰匙。
- Trưởng phòng đã cho tôi chìa khóa.
3. V-て いただきます (have someone kindly do — humble)
わたしは 先輩に ルートを 教えて 頂きました。
- I had a senior kindly teach me the route.
- 我请前辈教了我路线。 / 我請前輩教了我路線。
- Tôi đã được tiền bối chỉ cho tuyến đường.
4. V-て くださいませんか (very polite request)
地図を 見せて くださいませんか。
- Could you (kindly) show me the map?
- 能请您给我看看地图吗？ / 能請您給我看看地圖嗎？
- Ngài có thể cho tôi xem bản đồ không?

Grammar Patterns
もらう→いただく / くれる→くださる (respect)
Same giving/receiving as L24, raised in politeness when the other person is a superior: もらう→いただく (I humbly receive), くれる→くださる (they kindly give to me).
あげる→やる (downward)
When giving to someone below you (subordinate, child, pet, plant): あげる→やる. 孫に お菓子を やります.
V-て いただきます / くださいます
Attach to the て-form for actions done for/by you politely: 教えて いただきました (I had (them) kindly teach me), 見せて くださいました (they kindly showed me). Request: 〜て くださいませんか (very polite).

Who’s above, who’s below?
Choose the verb by the social position of the giver/receiver: superiors → いただく / くださる; equals → もらう / くれる / あげる; below → やる. Getting this right shows you read the relationship correctly.
Request ladder (review + new top)
〜て → 〜てください → 〜てくださいませんか → 〜ていただけませんか (L26). 「見せて くださいませんか」 is very polite; 「見せて いただけませんか」 is the humble peak.
