Grammar Patterns
可能動詞 (Potential verb)
Group I: -u → -eru (話す→話せる). Group II: -る → -られる (見る→見られる). する→できる, 来る→来られる. The object often takes が: 日本語が話せます.
見えます / 聞こえます
Spontaneous potential — something is naturally visible / audible without effort. Different from 見られる/聞ける (can see/hear by choice). 窓が見えます = the window is (naturally) visible.
〜しか + negative
「〜しか」 always pairs with a negative verb, meaning ‘only / nothing but’. ひらがなしか読めません = can read only hiragana (and nothing else).
Grammar Picture
見えます vs 見られます — what’s the difference?
見えます = naturally comes into view (no effort): 山が見えます。
見られます = able to see by choice/opportunity: 映画が見られます。
Same for 聞こえます (naturally audible) vs 聞けます (can hear by choice).
〜しか always wants a negative
「しか」 cannot take a positive verb. It replaces を/が and forces the negative form:
- 百円しかありません。(I have only 100 yen.)
- ひらがなしか読めません。(can read only hiragana)
Roleplay Practice
Scene: A rooftop surveillance. Pair up — A = partner on comms, B = Mike. Swap roles.
A (相棒): 部屋が 見えますか?
(Can you see the room?)
B (マイク): はい、ここから よく 見えます。
(Yes, I can see it well from here.)
A: 何か 聞こえますか?
(Can you hear anything?)
B: 遠くで サイレンが 聞こえます。急ぎましょう。
(I hear sirens in the distance. Let’s hurry.)
How do you say this in Japanese?
