Episode 40: Whether or Not
A meeting is set, but the guest list is a mystery. Who will walk through that door, he can’t say.
会合は決まった。だが客は謎のままだ。あの扉から誰が入ってくるか、彼には言えない。
だれが くるか、わかりません。
The man beside him — ally or enemy? That, he intends to find out.
隣の男 ── 味方か、敵か? それを、彼は確かめる つもりだ。
かれが 敵か どうか、確かめます。
There’s only one way to learn if the door is wired. He’ll try it.
その扉に仕掛けが あるか知る方法は一つ。試してみる。
この ドアを 開けて みます。
And the escape route — usable, or a trap? He’ll check it himself.

Key Sentences
1. embedded question (WH … か)
だれが くるか、わかりません。
- I don’t know who will come.
- 我不知道谁会来。 / 我不知道誰會來。
- Tôi không biết ai sẽ đến.
2. 〜か どうか (whether or not)
かれが 敵か どうか、確かめます。
- I’ll verify whether he is an enemy or not.
- 我要确认他是不是敌人。 / 我要確認他是不是敵人。
- Tôi sẽ xác nhận anh ta có phải kẻ địch không.
3. V-て みます (try doing)
この ドアを 開けて みます。
- I’ll try opening this door.
- 我试着打开这扇门。 / 我試著打開這扇門。
- Tôi thử mở cánh cửa này.
4. 〜か どうか + 〜て みます
この ルートが 使えるか どうか、調べて みます。
- I’ll try checking whether this route is usable.
- 我试着查一下这条路线能不能用。 / 我試著查一下這條路線能不能用。
- Tôi thử kiểm tra tuyến đường này có dùng được không.

Grammar Patterns
Embedded question — … か
Put a question inside a bigger sentence with か (no か? mark). WH-questions: 「だれが 来るか、わかりません」. The embedded clause uses plain form.
〜か どうか
For yes/no questions embedded in a sentence: 「敵か どうか、確かめます」 = I’ll check whether (he) is an enemy or not. (な-adj/N: just the word + か どうか.)
V-て みます
Do something to see what happens — ‘try ～ing’. 食べて みます = I’ll try eating (it). Past: 〜て みました (tried and found out).
Grammar Picture
か vs か どうか
- WH-question (who/what/where…): just か — 「どこに あるか」.
- Yes/No question: か どうか — 「あるか どうか」 (whether or not it exists).
〜てみる nuance
‘Try and see’. You attempt something to learn the result: 「この 服を 着て みます」 (try on / see how it looks). Not the same as 〜ようとする (attempt to). Casual: 〜てみる.

(Do you know who will come?)
マイク: いいえ。でも、敵か どうか 確かめます。
(No. But I’ll check whether they’re an enemy.)
相棒: ドアは?
(And the door?)
マイク: 開けて みます。気を つけて。
(I’ll try opening it. Be careful.)
