Grammar Patterns

state vs action; completion vs regret.

V-て います (resulting state)

With change-of-state verbs (開あaく, 割わwaれる, つく…), 〜ています describes the state that remains after the change — not an ongoing action. ドアが開あaいています = the door is (now) open.

V-て しまいました (completion)

Emphasizes finishing something completely: 全部読んでしまいました = read it all (done).

V-て しまいました (regret)

The same form also marks an unintended, regrettable result: なくしてしまいました = lost it (oops).

Grammar Picture

て います ── the state left behind ドアが 開く→開いて います(now open) change verb + ています = resulting state (not an action in progress) て しまいました ── two flavors 全部 集めてしまいました✓ completion なくしてしまいました✗ regret (oops)
  • 目標文型this lesson’s pattern这一课的句型這一課的句型mẫu câu của bài này
  • 名詞noun名词danh từ
  • 述語sentence ending句尾句尾phần cuối câu
〜ています: action-in-progress vs resulting-state

Same form, two meanings — context decides:

  • Progress: 食たtaべています = is eating (right now).
  • State: 開あaいています = is open (a state, after opening). Common with 開あaく・閉しshiまる・割わwaれる・つく・結婚けっこんkekkonする・住すsuむ.
しまう — completion or regret?

Tone & context tell them apart. With mistakes (なくす, 忘わすwasuれる, 落おoとす) it's usually regret. With tasks (読よyoむ, 食たtaべる, 終おoわる) it's usually completion. Casual: 〜ちゃった.

Roleplay Practice

describe a disturbed room.

(The window is broken too. Someone was here.)

マイク: でも、証拠しょうこshoukoは ぜんぶ 集あつatsuめて しまいました。行いiきましょう。
(But I've gathered all the evidence. Let's go.)
