Grammar Patterns

command/prohibitive by group.

命令形めいれいけいmeireikei (command)

Group I: -u → -e (行いiく→行いiけ, 逃にniげる is Group II→逃にniげろ). Group II: -る → -ろ (見みmiる→見みmiろ). する→しろ, 来くkuる→来こkoい. Strong/rough — signs, emergencies, orders.

禁止形きんしけいkinshikei V-る + な

Add な to the dictionary form = 'Don't ~!'. 入はいhaiる→入はいhaiるな, 止とtoまる→止とtoまるな. Common on signs: 「立入禁止たちいりきんしtachiirikinshi」 spoken as 「入はいhaiるな」.

〜という 意味いみimiです / 〜と 言いiって いました

「X」という意味いみimiです explains what something means. 「…」と言いiっていました reports what someone said (hearsay, vs the direct 〜と言いiいました of L21).

Grammar Picture

Command & prohibition (strong forms) 行く→行け(do it!) 入る→入るな(don't!) Meaning & hearsay: 「とまれ」という 意味です 「すぐ戻る」と 言って いました

When are command/prohibitive forms used?

Very strong — normally avoided in polite speech. You meet them in: signs, traffic, sports, emergencies, male rough speech, and quoting rules. For requests, use 〜てください instead.

と言いiいました vs と言いiっていました

と言いiいました: reports a single past statement. と言いiっていました: conveys a message/hearsay you're passing on ('he was saying…'). The ていました form is common for relaying messages.

Roleplay Practice

read a sign, relay a message.
